Crib Goch Ridge Traverse

This is a challenging and rewarding mountain route that follows the narrow crest of Crib Goch—one of Snowdonia’s most thrilling scrambles. High above the valleys and lakes of Yr Wyddfa, the traverse offers dramatic exposure, hands-on movement, and unforgettable views.

A ridge traverse involves crossing a narrow, elevated route with steep drops on either side—requiring good balance, careful footwork, and a steady head for heights.

Crib Goch is an essential part of the Welsh 3000s challenge, so this traverse is a great way to get familiar with the terrain and build confidence ahead of the full event (there is a discount available when booking both events together).

What to expect

We’ll begin the day with a short briefing and kit check at Pen-y-Pass. After setting out along the Pyg Track, we’ll hike for around 40 minutes before branching off toward Crib Goch.

Before tackling the ridge, we’ll take time to practise some techniques for moving across rugged terrain, including how to approach Grade 1 scrambles with confidence and control.

Once prepared, we’ll traverse the exposed but rewarding Crib Goch ridge—taking our time, supporting each other, and enjoying the incredible views. From there, we’ll continue up to the summit of Yr Wyddfa before making our descent via the Miners’ Track, finishing back at Pen-y-Pass.

Parking

Parking is available at Pen y Pass Warden Centre, but you’ll need to book a space during the peak season (typically early April to early November). You can book a space through the JustPark website or app, as there are no pay-and-display options on-site. To avoid disappointment, make sure to secure your spot well ahead of your visit.

Another option is parking at Nant Peris or Llanberis and taking the Park and Ride shuttle bus to Pen y Pass. You can check the latest shuttle times and tickets on the Transport for Wales or Eryri National Park websites.

What to bring

Before setting off, it’s important to come prepared. The following list of essential items is what you must bring for safety and comfort, followed by some optional extras that can enhance your experience.

Essential items

Everyone needs to be self-sufficient and carry their own kit for the day. Make sure you’ve packed the following essentials:

  • Food and snacks – plus a little extra (your guide won’t say no to a treat!)
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers – proper waterproofs, not just water-resistant
  • At least 2 litres of water – staying hydrated is key
  • Head torch – even if we don’t plan to use it, it’s a must-have just in case
  • Warm layers – including a hat and gloves, even in summer
  • Sturdy walking boots – with ankle support (sorry, no trainers!)
  • Any personal medication – like inhalers, EpiPens, or anything you might need
A full kit check will be carried out before the event. Anyone missing essential items or wearing unsuitable kit will not be allowed to take part.

Optional items

You might also want to pack a few of these optional extras:

  • Walking poles – a big help on the knees, especially on long descents
  • Map and compass – great if you’re looking to build your navigation skills
  • Personal first aid kit – always handy for small scrapes or blisters
