The Welsh 3000s is one of the toughest and most iconic mountain challenges in the UK. It involves summiting all 15 peaks in Snowdonia that stand over 3,000 feet—without using any transport between them. Spanning three dramatic mountain ranges and over 24 miles of rugged terrain, it’s a true test of endurance, skill, and determination.
What to expect
Be prepared for a demanding day in the mountains. The route includes rough, uneven terrain, steep inclines, and scrambling sections that require confidence and sure-footedness. Weather conditions can vary greatly across the route, so appropriate clothing and equipment are essential.
We’ll meet at Snowdon Mountain Railway Station at 5:30am. Depending on group size, final transport logistics to Pen-y-Pass (our starting point) will be confirmed ahead of the day. We aim to leave Pen-y-Pass at approximately 6am.
There will be valley stops with light refreshments, including drinks. However, I strongly recommend bringing your own snacks to keep your energy up throughout the day.
Preparation
To give yourself the best chance of success and enjoyment, we strongly recommend getting out on the hills as much as possible in the lead-up to the event. Focus on building your endurance with long days on the mountain, ideally across uneven terrain and steep ascents. Including scrambling routes in your training is especially useful, as several sections of the Welsh 3000s involve hands-on rock and exposed ground.
We also suggest practising night hiking, since early starts or changing conditions may mean walking in the dark. Familiarity with using a head torch and navigating in low visibility can make a big difference to your confidence and safety.
The more prepared you are physically and mentally, the more rewarding the day will be.
