Whether it’s your first proper scramble or you’re looking to sharpen your mountain movement skills, this day out on Tryfan is all about building confidence, learning technique, and embracing the challenge of one of Snowdonia’s true classics.
What to expect
We’ll start the day with a short briefing and a quick kit check. After discussing our goals, we’ll begin with a short hike towards Tryfan.
Along the way, we’ll stop to practise different techniques for moving across rugged terrain, learning how to safely and confidently scramble. Once we’ve covered the basics, we’ll tackle Tryfan’s iconic north face, taking in the stunning views as we put your new (or existing) skills into action.
At the summit, we’ll take a well-earned break (weather permitting) before descending via the south face.

What to bring
Before setting off, it’s important to come prepared. The following list of essential items is what you must bring for safety and comfort, followed by some optional extras that can enhance your experience.
Essential items
Everyone needs to be self-sufficient and carry their own kit for the day. Make sure you’ve packed the following essentials:
- Food and snacks – plus a little extra (your guide won’t say no to a treat!)
- Waterproof jacket and trousers – proper waterproofs, not just water-resistant
- At least 2 litres of water – staying hydrated is key
- Head torch – even if we don’t plan to use it, it’s a must-have just in case
- Warm layers – including a hat and gloves, even in summer
- Sturdy walking boots – with ankle support (sorry, no trainers!)
- Any personal medication – like inhalers, EpiPens, or anything you might need
Optional items
You might also want to pack a few of these optional extras:
- Walking poles – a big help on the knees, especially on long descents
- Map and compass – great if you’re looking to build your navigation skills
- Personal first aid kit – always handy for small scrapes or blisters
